Strike rate is the statistic most quoted and least understood in the shortest format.

Where the runs were scored

A hundred and forty in the powerplay against the new ball is a different achievement from a hundred and forty at the death against a tired attack. The number does not distinguish between them.

A better question

Ask how many runs a batter scored compared with what an average player would have scored, facing the same bowlers, in the same overs, on the same pitch. That figure is harder to calculate and much more useful.
