A captain has to read a match while playing in it. Some of the best readers of a game were, by their own admission, ordinary players, and some of the greatest players were poor captains.

What the role costs

Batting averages usually dip in the first year of captaincy and recover in the second. Selectors who panic at the dip tend to create the problem they were worried about.

The captain does not have to be your best player. He has to be the person your best players will listen to at four in the afternoon.
