Fast Bowling Basics
Learn the basics of fast bowling, from the run-up to a smooth action. Build speed step by step.
Spin bowling turns the ball off the pitch. Learn a simple grip and how to give the ball a spin.

Spin bowling uses revolutions rather than pace. The aim is to make the ball turn, dip and bounce differently from what the batter expects.
Finger spin turns the ball with the fingers. For a right-arm off spinner the ball turns from off to leg against a right-handed batter.
Wrist spin turns the ball with the wrist and usually spins it the other way, from leg to off. Wrist spin is harder to control but turns more.
Hold the ball across the seam with the first two fingers spread. Spin comes from snapping those fingers, or the wrist, through release. Aim to give the ball as many revolutions as you can.
Beginners often try to turn the ball as far as possible. Flight and dip take more wickets. Tossing the ball above the batter’s eye line makes judging the length difficult, and a misjudged length is what produces a mistake.
Control comes first. A spinner who lands the ball consistently is far harder to face than one who turns it a long way but sprays it.
Pick one reaction. You can change it at any time.
