Cricket asks for sudden sprints, throws and rotations from a standing start. A warm-up prepares the body for that and lowers the injury risk.

Raise the temperature

Begin with five minutes of jogging or skipping. You want to be breathing a little harder and feeling warm before anything else.

Move through the range

Use movement rather than holding stretches:

  • Leg swings, forwards and sideways.
  • Arm circles in both directions.
  • Walking lunges with a gentle trunk rotation.
  • Hip openers and ankle rolls.

Add cricket movements

Follow with the actions you are about to perform: shadow batting, easy underarm catching, short run-throughs for bowlers. This links the warm-up to the session instead of leaving a gap.

Build up bowling

Bowlers should bowl a few deliveries off a short run, then a longer run, then full pace. Going straight to full pace cold is a common way to strain a side or back.

Static stretching

Save long held stretches for after play. Before play they can reduce power output, and they do not prepare the body for explosive movement.

What You Need

  • Comfortable clothes
  • Open space

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1Start with a light jog for a few minutes.
  2. 2Do gentle arm circles.
  3. 3Do slow leg swings.
  4. 4Practice a few easy throws.
  5. 5Finish with some short, easy runs.

Important Tips

  • Start slow and build up.
  • Stop if you feel any pain.

Common Mistakes

  • Warming up too fast.
